This missile is the SC's equivalent to the better-known Recluse, Scorpion, and Tarantula missiles used by the REF. Compared to these, the Viper has a far better performance: twice the range of the REF missiles, higher speed, and a heavier warhead. This all comes at the cost of weight; the Viper is 3 times as heavy as the Recluse.
Although technically a great success, the Viper was only carried by the Strike Garland, itself a rare mecha. Large production runs were planned, as were shoulder and vehicle fired variants, but these never reached service before the Invid Invasion. Likewise, a version of the Viper with a plasma warhead (completely interchangeable with the standard missile) was produced, but the Invid Invasion stopped all production before more than 1000 Viper B's were constructed. The Viper is without question the most powerful small missile developed by Terran Forces to date; and a direct copy has been ordered as armament for the new Tempest infantry mecha, as the combat proven but smaller and slower Recluse and Scorpion missiles are less effective against the new Invid Gamo and Gosu mecha.
